Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail, Plan a Visit

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Many of us here at SG really enjoy bike riding, and as it happens this past weekend my family and I took a bike trip along the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail. It really is amazing to see how well preserved and beautiful this trail is, surrounded by forests, fields and wetlands. Visitors can walk or ride along the same path that the mules used to tow the canal boats loaded with goods and passengers as it stretches from Cleveland to Akron.
At the Canal Visitor Center, Boston Store Visitor Center, Peninsula Depot Visitor Center or Hunt Farm Visitor Information Center you can talk to a park ranger, see exhibits and get information. This past weekend we saw a domonstration on how the canal boat traveled through the locks!
For more information you can visit the National Park Service website or plan your visit at the Ohio & Erie Canalway site.

Help tell Cleveland’s story: Take a survey on how we see ourselves now and in the future

Thursday, May 27th, 2010
As part of the 2019 strategic planning initiative, the lead consultants—Economic Transformations Group—hired Cleveland firm Studio Graphique to compile a survey that will help them establish the brand look and messaging for the initiative.
“This survey will help us to put a ‘finger in the wind’ and check in on the current vibe of Clevelanders—how do we see ourselves and our future,” said Studio Graphique president Rachel Downey. “We will use the results of this survey as well as other data inputs (i.e., the Cleveland+ research data) to develop a foundation for the brand.”
The survey (posted on Survey Monkey) asks 12 multiple choice and short-answer questions, including:
What’s your favorite community in Cleveland to hang out in?
What color is Cleveland?
Describe your ideal day in Cleveland.
Why do you live in Cleveland?
What does Cleveland have that’s worth a special trip from somewhere else?
What’s special about your neighborhood?
What genre of music represents Cleveland best?
The year is 2019. What are some of the most remarkable differences about Cleveland today compared with Cleveland 2010?

Jane’s Walk – Ohio City this Weekend!

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail that now seem like common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists.

Jane’s Walk was inaugurated on May 5, 2007 in Toronto by a group of Jane’s friends and colleagues who wanted to honor her ideas and legacy. The first Jane’s Walk began with Mayor David Miller proclaiming it Jane Jacobs Day. 27 tours were offered by volunteer local guides who got hundreds of people out exploring their neighborhoods.

Now we can all participate in our own Jane’s Walk here in Cleveland brought to us by GreenCityBlueLake! Meet some community members interested in celebrating the livability of our unique neighborhood, join us in appreciating historic landmarks, and contribute your ideas about how to make Ohio City’s streets more pedestrian, transit and bike friendly.

We will be walking around the neighborhood and talking about what we see.

Carsharing: Driving Made Easy

Monday, April 5th, 2010
Sometimes being a city dweller can make it difficult to own a car. Steming from Chicago, there has been many a time when there has been no parking to be found (thanks a lot loading zones and fire hydrents). Between finding a spot, paying for parking and just the general annoyance of owning a car in the city, I am happy to see carshare programs popping up all over the nation.
This idea has been in use for decades, but has really blossomed in this eco-minded world. It is a system of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour. It is great for people who make only occasional use of a vehicle, and others who would like occasional access to a vehicle of a different type than they use day-to-day.
The best part is there is a really great carshare program right here is Cleveland: CityWheels. (http://www.mycitywheels.com) CityWheels has locations throughout Cleveland for use, our favorite being right outside our door here in Shaker Square. To learn more about the program and how it works, visit there website.
Happy sharing!

2010-banner

It’s Cleveland International Film Festival time folks (March 18-28) and here is a brief list of movies we SGers must see:

Ingredients
The local food movement has taken root across the country. Just travel 50 miles west of Cleveland to get a taste of it at The Chef’s Garden, a small family farm in Huron, three miles from Lake Erie.

A Town Called Panic
Parachuting cows, snowball-throwing penguin machines, tidal waves, exploding houses, and pilfering sea creatures.

Father and Guns (De père en flic)
A laugh-out-loud funny and the highest-grossing French-language film ever released in Canada. Jacques and Marc are father and son undercover cops in Montreal. They’re both wise-cracking hotshots, the best at what they do. Only problem is, they can’t stand each other.

Colony
A visually stunning documentary that takes a bee’s-eye view of the unprecedented catastrophe in the world of the honeybee.

The House of Branching Love
A quirky comedy with haunting undertones; chock-full of bloodthirsty characters, it’s a Scandinavian “War of the Roses” — but much sexier.

The Last Days of Emma Blank
Cut off from civilization as well as any sense of reality, a group of sullen servants waits hand and foot upon a despicable tyrant with the no-nonsense name of Emma Blank. Emma Blank has come to a black house to die, and she demands that everyone cater to her every last whim.

Get your vouchers and popcorn, and enjoy!

As a member of the Larchmere Porchfest planning committee, I’m happy to report that Porchfest earned an “Excellence in Neighborhood Marketing” award from the non-profit organization LiveCleveland! Porchfest was also a Pecha Kucha-style presenter at the APA Cleveland Planning and Zoning Workshop held this November.

The first annual Porchfest, which took place this past June, featured a mix of local musicians. Over 20 “concerts” were held on front porches throughout Larchmere and ended with a concert on Shaker Square, highlighting this unique neighborhood. Planning has begun for Porchfest 2010 – stay tuned to Porchfest’s website and Facebook page for updates!
