Elements Bistro on Euclid Opens on Cleveland State’s Campus
Cleveland, Ohio –
Elements Bistro on Euclid, the new restaurant on Cleveland State University’s campus,
opened on Monday, February 11, 2008, on the first floor of the University’s Parker Hannifin Administration Center at 2300 Euclid Avenue.
When Michael Schwartz joined Cleveland State University as President in 2001, he brought with him a vision to create a sense of community and place on campus and a desire to encourage the surrounding businesses and the local community to engage in this vision as well.
As a part of this vision, and as a result of a University survey for its Campus Master Plan, it was identified that Cleveland State lacked a formal, sit-down restaurant to meet student and faculty needs.
In 2004, the opportunity arose to open the restaurant in the storefront space that would be a part of CSU’s $16.5 million project, funded by university bonds, to renovate historic Howe Mansion and build the new Parker Hannifin Administration Center. Braun & Steidl Architects of Akron, Ohio served as the lead designers for the Howe Mansion, Administration Building and the Elements restaurant space.
In the spring of 2007, the University hired Studio Graphique, Inc., a Cleveland-based brand consultancy and environmental graphic design firm, to assist in naming the restaurant and to design a logo, exterior signage, menus and marketing collateral.
Studio Graphique designed the identity to reflect the four elements, wind, earth, fire and water and CSU roughly took the concept into its menu concepts, with fusion and local food offerings reflecting the four ideals. The exterior identity sign and window graphic help draw attention to Elements, designed to appeal to nearby businesses, students, faculty and visitors on campus, as well as those looking to have a quick breakfast or to host a corporate event.
The name, Elements Bistro on Euclid, is drawn from the title of the mathematician Euclid’s
Elements – regarded as the most influential textbook ever written, and a play on the restaurant's university setting and its address on Euclid Avenue. Elements’ cuisine strives to showcase simple preparations that highlight the elemental quality of seasonal ingredients and the best our region has to offer.
Elements Bistro on Euclid is located on the first floor of the Parker Hannifin Administration Center at 2300 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44115. Open for breakfast and lunch, Monday - Friday from 7 am - 4 pm; can be reserved for parties of 30 or more in the evenings and on weekends.

Studio Graphique Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary with “Art of Space” Exhibit
Cleveland, Ohio – 2007 marked the ten-year anniversary of Studio Graphique, a brand consultancy and environmental graphic design firm. To celebrate, the firm partnered with ten local artists, both established and emerging, to help communicate the process of thinking about space in the same way that environmental graphic designers do in an exhibit titled Art of Space.
Environmental Graphic Design embraces many design disciplines including graphic, architectural, interior, landscape, and industrial design, all concerned with the visual aspects of wayfinding, communicating identity and information, and shaping the idea of place. (from the Society of Environmental Graphic Design)
Keeping with the theme of tens, the ten artists were commissioned to think about their sense of space at ten different signature areas throughout the City of Cleveland.
Each artist was asked to think about how they understand spaces and places and interpret them through their own medium, style and vision. Using the criteria established each artist was driven to follow their senses and think about space using the same process the firm uses, but through the artist’s own eyes.
The pieces were put on public display and unveiled at the Ingenuity Fest a celebration of art and technology held in downtown Cleveland on July 19 – 22, 2007. Following Ingenuity Fest the works were displayed in a storefront space at Studio Graphique’s home base, Shaker Square from August 1 - September 16. Each of the finished pieces were sold at a live auction at the firm’s private anniversary party that fall.
Fifty (50) percent of each piece sold went back to the artist and the remaining funds were given to the following arts organizations that have been vital in making this exhibit happen - Red Dot Project, Cleveland Public Art, and SPACES Gallery.

Homegrown Design Firm Provides Fresh New Look for Eight Area Heinen’s Stores
Studio Graphique recently completed the installation of a new brand identity and signage program for eight of Heinen’s family-owned and operated fine foods stores including the following locations: University Heights; Pepper Pike; Shaker Heights; Aurora; Willoughby; Middleburg Heights and the newly purchased and renovated Strongsville store.
Studio Graphique was selected by the architecture firm Process Creative Studios to join their team and serve as the Environmental Graphic Design Consultant for several Heinen’s stores. The firm provided a brand identity and signage system that reflected Heinen’s history, mission and values and helped tell their “sourcing story”.
After careful analysis of Heinen’s core identity, existing brand and store layout, Studio Graphique and Process collaborated with Heinen’s corporate staff to develop an In-Store Brand Experience that would encompass all of their aesthetic, communication, and wayfinding needs, while helping to demonstrate the sourcing story of how Heinen’s products are grown, harvested, and selected.
“When redesigning the look and feel of the stores, we based it on the idea of an outdoor market” said Rachel Downey, Principal and Creative Director, Studio Graphique. “All of the department signage and aisle signs are hung at a pedestrian level and have large lettering, to create better ease of use and a more intimate environment for shoppers.”
Studio Graphique put special emphasis on Heinen’s stand-out departments, giving them new names and unique identities within the larger store. These areas include:
Joe’s Meat Market – Home of Heinen’s Own Products (named after Tom and Jeff Heinen’s grandfather, the store founder)
The Produce Marketplace – redesigned to create more of a market feel
The Wine Bin – showcasing wine selections and food paring ideas
The Kitchen Table – area for prepared meals, cooked in-store by Heinen’s own chefs.
Studio Graphique also designed a new signage rod system for product display signage that allows Heinen’s to add graphics, descriptions and stories that provide unique educational opportunities for shoppers to learn about the products, how to use them, where they came from, individual farmer stories, the growing/selection process, etc. King Retail Solutions of Eugene, Oregon fabricated all of the new signs.
Studio Graphique is currently working with Heinen’s to incorporate the in-store brand into all store communications by adopting the overall look and feel of the store interiors into all aspects of the Heinen’s brand identity.
